There's this dude, David Lewis.
This is in 1989.
Successful lawyer.
He lives in Amarillo, Texas with his wife and his young daughter.
And in January of that year, his wife and his daughter, they decide they're going to go on this weekend trip to Dallas, but it was
a trip that normally David would have gone with them to just go be part of the trip.
But it was the Super Bowl weekend and he's like, actually, you know what?
I'm going to stay here.
I'm going to just watch the Super Bowl.
You guys go, you know, see you when you get back.
And they're like, okay.
The mom and the daughter, they leave and they come back a couple of days later on the day of the Super Bowl.
They actually returned to their house in Amarillo.
And when they get to the house, they expected to see her husband, but they go in the house and there's nothing odd about the inside
of the house, but they see the TVs on and it's on the channel for the Super Bowl, but David's not in the room with the
TV.
She gets to the kitchen and she sees that his wedding ring and his watch are sitting on the counter.
So she's in the kitchen like, what in the world?
Like he's not here.
And then she went outside and she realized she hadn't noticed, but his car was actually not in the driveway.
So she's thinking he's probably out at a buddy's house.
He'll be home soon.
So she goes to bed and then she gets up in the morning.
David's still not home.
So at this point, she's concerned.
She goes to the police.
The police, they quickly find his car and it's been abandoned.
near the courthouse.
Remember, he's a lawyer just for reference, so it's near the courthouse and no damage to his car, but it's parked in the lot.
He's not there and they look in the car and they find his checkbook, his license, his wallet are in sort of the cup holders where
he would normally keep them.
And then under the mat on the driver side were the keys to the car and the keys to his house.
So the police don't have much to go on.
They expand their search, but there's no sign of David.
And eleven months later, David still hasn't shown up and they officially say this is no longer being viewed as a crime.
We're going to view this as David chose to disappear.
We believe he's elected to basically abandon this life.
People do do that.
He's an adult, there's no sign of a crime.
Eleven years later, out in Washington state, there's this cop who is a big true crime enthusiast and he had just learned about this one particular
mystery of this hit and run.
It was a John Doe that had happened in Washington state.
He actually was one of the first cases that he had worked on when he became a cop eleven years earlier.
He began investigating it.
Basically, this guy had been struck on the side of the road in Washington and he had no ID.
He was wearing military fatigues.
He was just walking along this highway and this cop had been the first on the scene and he had seen him and like it just
stuck with him as this weird thing where nobody ever identified him.
Simultaneously, he saw this like news report about how David Lewis was still missing after eleven years and the family was giving an interview about David
Lewis and he saw a picture of David Lewis and he was like, oh my god, I think that's the same guy from the John Doe
case.
I think he's the guy who got hit eleven years ago.
And so he pulled out the evidence that included the glasses of the guy who was hit and killed.
It was the same prescription, same type of glasses.
They ultimately did DNA.
It took a minute, but they discovered that sure enough, the John Doe who had been a totally unidentified body in the side of the road
was David Lewis, which means when he was hit and killed was twenty four hours after the wife and daughter came home from the trip.
So if we follow what's happened here, David Lewis starts watching the game within twenty four hours without the use of his car, without his ID,
without any of his belongings, he winds up sixteen hundred miles away in Yakima, Washington, walking along a deserted highway.
Is struck and killed, and he's wearing top to bottom military fatigues.
He has no identification on him, and he has no connections in Yakima.
But that was definitely him on the side of the road, and to this day, no one has any idea what happened to David Lewis or
why.
